Issues related to aging: If you are a veteran aged 65 or older dealing with issues related to aging (for example, adjusting to retirement, death of spouse), you may be interested in specialized treatment in the Geriatric Mental Health Clinic. Common symptoms of depression may include:

  • Feelings of sadness that last for 2 weeks or more
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
  • Noticeable changes in appetite and/or sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating or making everyday decisions
  • Feelings of failure, guilt or worthlessness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Having thoughts of death or suicide

Symptoms of anxiety may include:

  • Frequent worry
  • Feeling keyed up or restless
  • Irritability
  • Sleep problems
  • Anxiety in social situations
  • Panic attacks
  • Fear of specific situations or objects (e.g., air travel, heights, closed spaces)
  • Obsessions or recurring unwanted thoughts or impulses (e.g., thoughts about being contaminated by dirt or germs)
  • Compulsions or repetitive behaviors (e.g., checking things repeatedly, excessive hand washing)
