Our team of specialists sees patients who have problems with the rhythms of the heart, called arrhythmias. We offer a variety of treatments appropriate for a wide range of patients, from younger veterans with otherwise structurally healthy hearts, to those suffering from congestive heart failure or cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle).

Some of our more common treatments include:

   • Medication
   • Implantable devices, such as pacemakers and defibrillators
   • Minimally invasive procedures that are directed at the specific portion of the heart causing the abnormal heartbeats

Echocardiography provides state-of-the-art adult cardiac ultrasound imaging to assist in the diagnosis and management of a variety of cardiac illnesses. Our attending physicians are board-certified in echocardiography and supervise all clinical testing and all staff is trained in the most up-to-date technologies in the field today.

We offer a variety of ultrasound imaging tests to assess heart function, including noninvasive and invasive exams, stress tests using exercise, and stress tests using pharmaceutical agents.

Cardiac catheterization is used to diagnose and treat coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease.  Procedures are arranged on an elective outpatient basis, or for inpatients with more urgent needs. The catheterization lab is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, for patients with acute coronary syndromes (e.g. heart attack).

Some of their more commonly-known procedures include angiography, angioplasty and stenting.

The Vascular Medicine Service runs an outpatient clinic in the Cardiology Clinic area on the 1st floor of Building 1.  We assess atherosclerosis (cholesterol blockages) in the leg arteries (peripheral artery disease), and other arteries in the body.  We also run a stroke prevention service that focuses on managing some causes of stroke such as carotid artery disease, and heart defects such as patent foramen ovale (PFO) in collaboration with other services such as Neurology.  We offer treatments for these conditions in the Cardiac Cath Lab when required.
