Visitor Information

Locations

VAMC Durham serves veterans from a 26-county area in central and eastern North Carolina.  In addition to our main medical center in Durham, we offer a number of services to our patients in four community-based outpatient clinics.

Waiting Areas

For your convenience and safety, we have special waiting areas throughout the facility. Please do not gather in the hallways or at the nurses' stations. You may also want to review our Visiting Hours and Policies.

We have volunteers who work in the Intensive Care waiting areas at specific times. Please check in, and give the volunteer the patient's name. If you leave the waiting area at any time, please let the volunteer know, in case we need to contact you.

Security

The Durham VA Medical Center has a Police Service. Our officers provide 24-hour patrols of the facility and parking lots. For general police assistance, please dial 6230. In case of an emergency, dial 7888. Report all suspicious or criminal activity, vehicle accidents, and personal property losses to the VA Police while on the facility grounds as soon as possible.

Because the VA Medical Center is federal property, all persons and bags are subject to search. In addition, no weapons, alcohol, or illegal drugs are permitted.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found is located in room NG009A on the ground floor near the Medical Center Library.  You may also contact them at extension 5260.

Chapel

A nondenominational chapel is located on the third floor of the hospital in room C3018. Protestant Worship Services and Catholic Mass are held on a regular basis. Please contact Chaplain Service at extension 6596 for additional information or to speak with one of our Chaplains.

Rev. John P. Oliver, D.Min., BCC is the Chief, Chaplain Service & ACPE Supervisor at the Durham VA Medical Center. He can be reached at (919) 286-6867.

Visitation Policy

The Durham VAMC visitation policy is consistent with the Joint Commission standard RI.01.01.01. The Durham VA provides a health care environment that is welcoming to Veterans and their family and friends. Veterans are allowed to decide whom to involve in their care and whom to call on for social support.

The Durham VA abides by the Joint commission requirements concerning patient rights and responsibilities. Visitation is consistent with the Joint Commission standard RI.01.01.01

We allow a family member, friend, or other individual to be present with the patient for emotional support during the course of the stay (unless the individual’s presence infringes on other’s rights, safety, or is medically or therapeutically contraindicated). The Durham VA prohibits discrimination based on age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, language, physical or mental disability socioeconomic status, sec, sexual orientation, and gender identify or expression.
