Matthias Mitman began his responsibilities as DCM at the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras in August 2011.  Prior to his current assignment, Matthias worked at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow as Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs.  In his most recent tour in Washington, Matthias served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Nonproliferation Policy and Negotiation, concurrently representing the U.S. in the G8 Nonproliferation Directors Group and the Global Partnership Working Group.  Matthias also worked in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation as Director of the Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction.  Previously he served at the National Security Council as Director for Iraq with responsibility for U.S. economic policy in Iraq and international engagement.  Before joining NSC staff, Matthias was assigned to U.S. Embassy Baghdad as Senior Economic Advisor.

During his State Department career, Matthias has served in a variety of overseas and Washington-based assignments.  His previous posts include tours as Deputy Director of the Office of United Kingdom, Benelux and Ireland Affairs, Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Special Assistant to Ambassador Richard Schifter for the Southeast European Cooperative Initiative, and as a financial economist in the Office of Monetary Affairs.

Previous positions also include assignments as Watch Officer in the State Department Operations Center, as Senior Duty Officer in the White House Situation Room, as Science Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, and as Vice-Consul at U.S. Embassy Tegucigalpa.

The recipient of several State Department Meritorious and Superior Honor Awards, Matthias speaks Greek, Russian, Spanish and some German.  He is a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College, receiving an M.A. in National Security Studies in 2006.  Before starting his career with the State Department, Matthias taught at Ball State University as an Assistant Professor of Economics.
