“Gus” Hawkins was proud of many accomplishments in his time as Chairman of the Education and Labor Committee, but the one he chose to be included in his portrait was Opening Doors for America’s Children, a report on child welfare completed the same year as the portrait. Also in the foreground, a small statue of Abraham Lincoln serves as a bookend for several legal volumes.
