In the print on the top half of this page from an illustrated newspaper, reporters rushed to file their stories via telegraph, a technology that by the 1850s was indispensable to correspondents for newspapers far from Washington. The telegraph room, run by Western Union, was conveniently located next to the Correspondents’ and Journalists’ Room, where harried reporters turned their scribbled notes into news stories.
