The report provides the number of large trucks and buses reported in fatal, non-fatal, injury, towaway, and HM Placard crashes. The report also identifies the number of fatalities and injuries reported in large truck and bus crashes for each state for the most recent five years.

Graphic This study is based on a three-year data collection project conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). LTCCS is the first-ever national study to attempt to determine the critical events and associated factors that contribute to serious large truck crashes allowing DOT and others to implement effective countermeasures to reduce the occurrence and severity of these crashes.

Graphic A web link to the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute’s (UMTRI) Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics truck and bus fatal accident reports. UMTRI has conducted an annual national survey on fatal accidents involving medium and heavy trucks since 1980 and on buses since 1999. The resulting data files are called Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA) and Buses Involved in Fatal Accidents (BIFA).
