Statement on Human Rights

March 2, 2010

TEGUCIGALPA, M.D.C. - The Embassy of the United States expresses its grave concern about a recent series of events in which it appears individuals who express political opinions, especially regarding the coup d’état of June 28, are targeted for violence and intimidation.

The Embassy has been closely following allegations that anti-coup activists have recently been the victim of violence and intimidation based on their political beliefs.  The Embassy expresses its sincere condolences to all victims and their families.  Also troubling was the March 1 assassination attempt of journalist Karol Cabrera.  The Embassy wishes Ms. Cabrera a speedy recovery and expresses its sincere condolences to the family of Ms. Cabrera’s colleague, Joseph Ochoa, who lost his life during the assassination attempt.

We call on the appropriate authorities to thoroughly investigate these crimes and fully prosecute those responsible.  Freedom to express one’s political views must be protected by all arms of the government.
