  • The American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit of the Consular Section assists American citizens in Laos. The unit provides a variety of services including: passport and citizenship services, registration of births, assistance with Federal benefits, notarial services, voting and tax information. The ACS Unit also provides emergency assistance to American citizens in distress. In an emergency, an Embassy Duty Officer can be reached at any time. In the ACS web pages, you will also find updated Warden Messages and other information for American Citizens living or traveling in Laos and information on local medical facilities and lawyers.
  • The Embassy encourages all American citizens visiting or residing in Laos to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). American citizens can enroll on the Department of State’s website or in person at the Embassy.
  • The American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit in the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy is located in central Vientiane, near the That Dam (black stupa).
  • The Embassy and the Consular Section cannot act as your travel agent, bank, lawyer, investigator or law enforcement agent. Please do not expect the office to find you employment, get you residence or driving permits, act as interpreters, search for missing luggage, settle disputes with guesthouse managers/taxi drivers, or mediate family disputes. You may not stay at the U.S. Embassy if you are out of money. However, the Consular Section can assist you to obtain help in these and other such matters.
