Charlemagne said that "to know another language is to have a second soul." In this rapidly globalizing 21st century world, that simple statement summarizes the gift of regional expertise, cultural understanding, and the ability to communicate directly in the language of an ally, partner or colleague.

Just back from a day in Kosovo, in the heart of the Balkans. What a difference a decade makes.
It wasn't so long ago that there were nearly 60,000 NATO troops in Balkan peacekeeping missions, often engaged in vigorous combat -- it was the Afghanistan of the 1990s.

We've had a busy several days at my headquarters in Mons, Belgium as we undertake the primary business of the Alliance: protecting our borders.

Given the continuing turbulence in Syria, the NATO nations -- acting upon the request of member Ally Turkey -- have decided to deploy purely defensive Patriot missiles to the Turkish-Syrian border.

A cold, rainy late fall day in Lask, Poland. On the well-maintained tarmac at the small Polish Air Force base here, two military bands -- one U.S., the other Polish -- are playing resolutely through the drizzle while sharp Polish Airmen march in time to the music.
