Deputy Chief of Mission Michael J. Murphy

Michael J. Murphy, a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Foreign Service, was named Deputy Chief of Mission of U.S. Embassy, Gaborone, Botswana in 2012.

Immediately prior to his posting in Gaborone, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Pristina, Kosovo for three years.  He served as Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy, Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.  His other overseas postings include London, England; Yaounde, Cameroon; and Lagos, Nigeria.  While in Washington, DC, he served as Chief of Staff both to the Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs and the Director General of the Foreign Service, and as Desk Officer for Bulgaria and for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Michael's Foreign Service Career has included tenure in the Trans-Atlantic Fellowship Program, through which U.S. diplomats serve in the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of allied governments in Europe.  He served from 2001-2002 in Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office as Office Director for Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus.

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Michael worked on Capitol Hill as Senior Legislative Aide to Congresswoman Marilyn Lloyd of Tennessee with responsibility for international affairs and defense issues.

Michael Murphy hails from East Greenbush, New York, and is an avid New York Yankees fan.  He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Hamilton College, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations.  He is married to Kimberly Murphy, who is also member of the U.S. Foreign Service.
