The birth through kindergarten (BK) major prepares individuals to work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners (i.e., ALL young children) with and without disabilities, including those at risk, and their families. In addition to working in public school classrooms, BK program graduates may find employment in early intervention programs, child care and education centers, residential placement centers, and other child and family settings. There are 2 different ways individuals can earn a BS in Birth-Kindergarten Education. The first is a traditional face-to-face program delivered on campus; the second is a degree completion program delivered via distance education. The degree completion program is delivered entirely online to residents of North Carolina only. Non-residents are not eligible for admission to the program and may not register for BK classes delivered online. Upon completion of their course work students are also required to complete a yearlong internship (student teaching) in a public school setting.
East Carolina University and many NC Community Colleges have entered into an articulation agreement between the AAS in Early Childhood Education and the BS Birth through Kindergarten program. For more information: http://www.ecu.edu/che/cdfr/aas2bk.html
