National Applications

Application Description
Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) Grade Crossing Viewer The FRA's GIS website provides a web-based mapping application that permits users to map, view and zoom to all rail grade crossings in the United States. Accident, injury, and fatality information for each grade crossing is available.
FHWA's Office of Planning, Environment, and Realty Executive Geographic Information System The HEP GIS website includes simple navigation tools that enable users to locate a specific geographic area of interest, and to create a map showing various geographic features and themes. Users can also obtain specific information about a feature, and can print or save an electronic copy of the map they create
Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Environmental Conservation Online System (ECOS): Geotract and National Wetland Inventory (NWI) These separate IMS mapping tools enable the user to display and download spatial data related to wetlands hydrology, transportation, land use/land cover, land ownership, political boundaries, EPA point sources, mines, dams, Habitat Conservation Plans, and refuges. Users can also identify wetland attributes, view attribute metadata, generate wetlands acreage statistics, and view Digital Ortho-Photo Quads and Digital Raster Graphics of the desired area.
FWS - Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Data. This general FWS GIS site contains links to data; information about GIS tools, standards, and metadata; and a glossary of GIS terms. FWS also has developed the Interactive Map and Data Server (IMDS) Internet Applications, which are available from this site.
FWS Migratory Bird Conservation Node This GIS application was developed to facilitate informed querying of certain bird monitoring databases accessible through the NBII (National Biological Information Infrastructure) Bird Conservation Node. This application enables the user to display the results of geospatial queries of these databases. The capabilities of this site are intended to be of use to professional wildlife biologists and conservation planners, as well as to the general public.
The National Atlas of the United States® The National Atlas of the United States is an interactive map browser designed to provide a comprehensive, map-like view into the enormous wealth of data collected by the Federal Government. While the first National Atlas published in 1970 was a 400-page paper atlas, the second generation National Atlas is largely digital with an Internet mapping component.
National Park Service (NPS) GIS and Mapping Technologies This site use GIS applications to convey a wealth of information about US National Parks. From here, users can locate data on parks and park-related features, access training resources, and create and view maps online via the NPS Interactive Map Center.
National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) NSGIC, an organization of States committed to efficient and effective government through the use of geospatial information technologies, offers information on GIS hot topics, conferences, and profiles on state activities.
NatureServe Vista NatureServe Vista is a decision-support application that assists with local and regional land use and conservation planning. The application, which Is a collection of desktop and Internet software, can integrate information about biological issues, community conservation values and goals, and plans and policies for alternative futures. Visit NatureServe's website at www.natureserve.org.
Open GIS Consortium The website of an international, non-profit trade organization that aims to develop GIS computing standards.
US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) EnviroMapper EPA's EnviroMapper is an Internet Mapping Server (IMS) that displays comprehensive environmental data for the United States. From the EnviroMapper home page, users have several methods for viewing environmental data--by water features, brownfields sites, or by geographic area, for example. Demographic data are also available so that users can assess environmental justice issues.
US Geological Survey's (USGS) Natural Hazard Support System The Natural Hazards Support System (NHSS) is being developed by the USGS Rocky Mountain Geographic Science Center (RMGSC) to aid in monitoring, responding to, and analyzing natural hazard events. NHSS meets these needs by combining a wide range of natural hazards events into a single geo-spatial, web-enabled viewer, allowing users to easily see the geospatial relationship(s) of different natural hazard events and contributes to the analysis of their potential impacts.
US Geological Survey (USGS) National Map Viewers The National Map is an on-going project of the USGS. Four map viewers are currently available. Each viewer provides different functionality as not all datasets or functions are available through each one. Eventually, these viewers will converge into a single tool with robust data display, map production, and data download options.
