CNLS Services

CNLS is a significant institutional resource to Los Alamos National Laboratory. Since the CNLS serves as an interface between mission critical research at LANL and the outside research community, our visitor program and conference sponsorship program are activities of vital importance for the Center and the Laboratory. In addition to these programs, we have a few other services we provide to the LANL community in an effort to support our researchers.

Visitor Program

The Visitor Program is one of the major institutional activities of the Center. There are nearly 200 people visiting CNLS every year. Virtually all CNLS visitors give one of more talks in the form of a seminar, colloquium, or as a distinguished lectureship. Even if the visit is for the purpose of collaboration, the visitor is expected to give one lecture on her or his research. Most visitors spend a few days at CNLS, however, occasionally there are long-term visitors who spend anywhere from a month to an entire year at the CNLS. In particular, the visitor program accomplishes the following:

  • It enables CNLS to identify and explore the widest possible range of nonlinear and complex systems problems.
  • It provides outside researchers with access to the theoretical, experimental and computational resources of the Laboratory.
  • It helps disseminate the latest developments in nonlinear and complex systems science.
  • It helps form and fosters research collaborations between LANL researchers and outside researchers and academia.

To request a visitor through CNLS, please complete the Visitor Request Form.

Conference and Event Program

The sponsorship of conferences and events is another of the major institutional activities of the Center for Nonlinear Studies. CNLS provides sponsorship in the form of funding, preparatory administrative assistance, onsite administrative assistance, or a combination of two or three. CNLS usually sponsors approximately 10 conferences per year. Virtually all CNLS sponsored conferences take place in Los Alamos or Santa Fe to maximize the participation of LANL staff and the impact on LANL. CNLS encourages conferences which fall within the research areas focused on at CNLS. In particular, sponsorship of conferences accomplishes the following:

  • It enables CNLS to identify and explore the widest possible range of nonlinear and complex systems problems.
  • It helps disseminate the latest developments in nonlinear and complex systems science.
  • It helps form and fosters research collaborations between LANL researchers and outside researchers and academia.
  • It helps build new areas of research and refines the direction of existing areas of research.

To request conference sponsorship through CNLS, please review our Conference Sponsorship program. You can contact Ellie Vigil (ellie@lanl.gov, 7-2818) with any questions.

Poster Printing

CNLS has a large HP Plotter for poster printing. We do not mind providing this service free of charge, and we will print posters whenever possible. If we are not available, please keep in mind alternatives such as the poster printer in T-DO (Sharon Mikkelson, sharonm@lanl.gov) and in LANL's Print Shop (667-5124). The Print Shop will charge $200 for a poster with 3+ days notice and $400 for less notice. This is charged to your financial codes. In an emergency, posters can also be printed at FedEx Office in Santa Fe and the cost can be reimbursed through a Small Purchase Reimbursement.

As a reminder we do not have a dedicated person to print, and the software and printer are not user-friendly enough for individuals to print their own, so we can't guaranty that posters will always be able to be printed. Poster printing is entirely dependent on the availability of the CNLS staff. To increase the chance that your poster will be printed, please use the following guidelines:

  • Poster files must be delivered to CNLS a minimum of 2 full working days before you need the poster. Late requests should be sent to the Print Shop (667-5124). This means if you submit it to us on Wednesday, we should have it ready by the end of the day on Friday. Likewise, if you submit it on Thursday, it should be ready by the end of the day on Monday. During periods of high demand (e.g. Student Symposium, LDRD review, summer conference season, etc.) we will need even more notice to be able to accommodate your request.
  • Posters should be emailed to cnls-posters@lanl.gov or hand-delivered on a government USB stick. If you email a poster, be sure to call or stop by the office to make sure either Don or Adam have seen it and will be able to print it in time.
  • Posters must be pre-sized and saved as .pdf files. (When saving as a .pdf, be sure to change both the image size and the paper size and double-check your document properties before sending it to us). The only size limitation we have is that one dimension must be smaller than 52 inches. The other dimension may be as long as you need since we print on a roll.
  • Printing is usually available between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. If your poster is not completed before 5:00 PM, then it will not be available until the next morning when the office is unlocked.
  • Posters are printed in the order they are received except if CNLS needs the printer. CNLS jobs will take precedence even if received after yours.
  • As time allows, we will cut your poster to size but this is not guaranteed. Be aware that your poster may still need to be trimmed when you pick it up.

We hope you understand our limitations. Again, when we are able, we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Notary Public

Our Executive Administrator, Ellie Vigil, and our Center Administrator, Lysa Intrator are Notaries Public of the State of New Mexico. They are willing to perform Notarial Acts as their availability allows. Contact Ellie (7-2818) or Lysa (4-0189) to see if they are available.
