Savannah’s Air National Guard Fire Station Earns LEED Gold Green Building Certification

Presentation of Certification on Friday, Aug. 5, at noon, at Savannah’s Air Guard Fire Station

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, established by the U S Green Building Council, is the nation’s preeminent program for design, construction, operation, and energy savings in high performance energy conservation construction.

The 165th Airlift Wing and Combat Readiness Training Center Fire Station is the lead fire protection element at the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport.  The new fire station provides round-the-clock fire and emergency support for all inbound and outbound air traffic, and as an element of the Combat Readiness Training Center, provides critical hands-on training for National Guard firefighters from across the nation.

Mr. Mark Fitzpatrick, U.S. Green Building Council (Savannah Branch Chair), will make the presentation Friday at noon to the local National Guard officials, its firefighters, and the design firms responsible for the construction: Thomas and Hutton, (program manager, LEED administration, structural and civil design), Dulohery Weeks (mechanical, electrical and plumbing design), Greenline Architecture (architecture), and Akins-Cummings JV (general contractor).

LEED certification of the Air National Guard Fire Station is based on green design and construction features, positively impacting the project itself and the broader community. These features include: sensor controlled interior lighting fixtures; no permanent irrigation system; over 50% reduction in potable water usage through low-flow water closets, sinks, and showers; over 19% energy cost savings by including an improved thermal envelope; high efficiency glazing; reduced lighting power density; occupancy sensors and a high efficiency HVAC system; over 55% of the existing building’s interior non-structural elements; building materials with over 10% recycled content; over 20% of building materials manufactured within 500 miles; and low-emitting materials for paints, adhesives, carpets, and composite wood.

Capt. Amy Sandbothe will meet the media at the Davidson Avenue Gate, just off Dean Forest Road at 11:45 a.m.  Her contact number is 912-257-9388.
