3rd Radio Battalion Battalion Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major Eric B. Sutton enlisted into the Marine Corps on 12 October 1984. He attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego he was assigned to “Mike Co 3rd Battalion, platoon 3051“.

SgtMaj Sutton was promoted to Corporal in 1986, he checked into 2nd Maintenance Battalion, while assigned there he was transferred to A.P. Hill, where he was attached to the BSSG, so that he would participate in the invasion of Panama. 1990 Cpl Sutton was reassigned to Okinawa, to 3rd FSSG, 3rd Maintenance Battalion, Engineer Maintenance Company, Camp Foster.

During his tour in Okinawa, he was sent to the Philippines with the Volcano relief detachment. Cpl Sutton was promoted to Sergeant in 1990 and assigned Lateral move authority to Bulk Fuel Specialist. Sgt Sutton was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Bulk Fuel Company, SgtMaj Sutton went to England AFB, and participated in Ship to Shore fuel transfer operations.

In 1993 SgtMaj Sutton was reassigned to 3rd FSSG, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, Bulk Fuel Co. while assigned with 9th ESB, he participated in Tandem Thrust in Australia. In 1998, SgtMaj Sutton went to Parris Island and attended Drill Instructor School, upon completion of D.I. School he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, Kilo Company as a Drill Instructor.

In 1999 SgtMaj Sutton was promoted to Staff Sergeant and was assigned as the Battalion S-3 Chief, then returned to Kilo Company as a Senior Drill instructor and held that billet for two platoons, and was then assigned the Kilo Company Operations Chief. November 2001 SgtMaj Sutton was assigned to Marine Corps Detachment Fort Lee, Virginia as an instructor. In 2003 SSgt Sutton was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant . 

In May of 2004 GySgt Sutton was reassigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 Yuma AZ. SgtMaj Sutton deployed to Al Anbar with MWSS-371. In Dec 2005 GySgt Sutton was selected to First Sergeant. Upon his selection, MWSS-371 sent 1stSgt Sutton to MWSS-374 to fill the RBE Sergeant Major billet until May 2006, SgtMaj Sutton then received orders to 10th Marines. SgtMaj Sutton deployed twice with Golf Battery 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines, in which Golf Battery provided Convoy Security Detachments during the 1st deployment. During the second deployment Golf Battery was attached in direct fire support to Regimental Combat Team 1 & 6, with fire bases out of Baharia and Al Taqqdeum Iraq. In July 2009, SgtMaj Sutton was re-assigned to School Infantry-East, Infantry Training Battalion, Alpha Company. Presently 1stSgt Sutton is assigned to Headquarters & Instructor Company.

SgtMaj’s Sutton’s personal awards include; Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars (In Lieu of 5th award), Navy Marine Corps Achievement with two gold stars(In Lieu of 3rd award), Good Conduct Medal with Silver star and two bronze star(In Lieu of 8th award).
