Brigadier General Timberlake began his current assignment as the Deputy Commanding General, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and Commanding General, 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade, in February 2011.

Enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 1977 and was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in January 1982. Commissioned through the Enlisted Commissioning Program in August 1984 and graduated from Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Virginia, via the College Degree Completion Program in 1989.

Assignments in the Operating Forces include: Rifle Platoon Commander, Company Executive Officer, and Company Commander, 2d Battalion, 6th Marines; Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer, BLT 1/1, 15th MEU (SOC); Regimental Operations Officer, 1st Marines; Inspector and Instructor, 3rd Battalion, 23d Marines; and Chief of Staff, III MEF.

Assignments in the Supporting Establishment include: Platoon Commander, Executive Officer, and Company Commander, Officer Candidates School; and Commanding Officer, Weapons and Field Training Battalion, MCRD Parris Island.

Headquarters and Staff assignments include: Action Officer, Manpower Equal Opportunity Branch; Section Head, Manpower Military Policy Branch, Manpower and Reserve Affairs; South East Asia Plans Officer, Executive Assistant to the J5, and Deputy J54, US Pacific Command.

Military Education: Amphibious Warfare School, Command and Staff College, Naval War College, and the Joint Forces Staff College. He has been awarded a Masters in Military Studies and a Master of Arts, National Security and Strategic Studies.
