Telephone Assistance Line is Closing July 30

Bookmark and Share

Our commitment to a complete count required us to develop different ways to reach everyone. The vast majority of households received a census form in the mail in March, but others had a census form dropped off at their door or were enumerated in person. Many residents were also counted through our Group Quarters operation.

For over three months, Telephone Questionnaire Assistance has also been available to individuals who believe they weren’t included in the census. This opportunity is winding down. On Friday, July 30, we will be shutting down this toll-free line so we can begin the process of linking phone information to addresses for tabulation purposes.

If you believe you did not receive a form, didn’t mail back the form, or were not contacted by a census enumerator, please call 866-872-6868. It’s not too late to make sure you are counted in the 2010 Census.

Please note that as part of our Quality Assurance follow up this summer, we will visit addresses that were added to our address list too late to receive a form, so it is possible you may still be visited by a census taker.

  1. Today we were told to wrap it up on Thurs and to stand-by. This last process has been ugly. Found a good number of occupied houses. They were not vacant or delete just new ones that appeared!!!. People are really upset because they have been called on 2,3,4 times!!! And on the other side, some never got visited !!! At every morning meeting the rules change—if you are reading this and don’t believe this — you must on Mars!! The lack of technology and communication is really amazing. One small bit of advice—start planning now!!!

  2. Clerk says:

How about a heads-up on what we’re supposed to tell people who call the regional offices and want to be counted after the 30th?

  3. Vinson says:

This has been an utterly maddening experience with repeated phone calls to “verify” what the census taker recorded. (I’d been injured and just didn’t get around to timely completion of census form). I could understand her field supervisor doing verifying the answers. He had her name and the answers which he ran down with me. But since then… at least 1 call a week purporting to be from the Census Bureau, but none with “Census Bureau” showing up on the Caller ID. Cannot know if they are con artists, and refuse to cooperate.

  4. @Vinson We are currently following up with a small number of households to clarify answers about the number of people living at an address, based on answers they provided on the form.
Please, if you are one of the small percent of homes visited during our quality assurance process for re-interview or verification, take a few minutes to help us ensure the quality of the 2010 Census.
The caller will identify themselves as working for the U.S. Census Bureau and that the purpose of their call is to help the Census Bureau take the most accurate census and to ensure we have counted everyone at the right address.
The caller ID will likely show “U.S. Census Bureau.” If this text is not supported (such as on a cell phone), then the inbound toll-free number should show up. The exact number depends on the language skill for which the call is made. If you would like to confirm that you have been contacted by the Census Bureau, call 866-851-2010 and use the eight-digit case identification number provided to complete the interview.
We are charged with counting everyone, once, and only once, and in the right place. We check and double check to make sure we get it right.

  5. Field Enumerator wanting to keep working... says:

Well everyone in our crew got a call and we turned in our badges & bags. Sure hope I get called for the last QC Operation, “Field Verification”. It’s been a pleasure so far working for the Census.

  6. @Clerk: Please check with your regional office for more information.

  7. Clerk says:

I’m IN the Regional Office and I answer the phone calls from people who want to be counted. It’s Monday, August 2, and I still haven’t received the “talking points” we were supposed to have been given.

  8. Proud Field Enumerator... says:

Well I got a call from my prior CL, I’m need for another operation starting Aug 12th, doesn’t sound like “Field Verification”, will know more later. Anyway, I’m glad they called me again to help out.
