The First Annual Embassy – State Alumni Basketball Tournament
On August 24th, 2012, the U.S. Embassy in Kigali organized its first annual Embassy –State Alumni Basketball Tournament to engage with Rwandans who have participated in a State Department exchange program.
The tournament brought together five teams, two from the State Alumni side and three from the Embassy staff, of seven players each. The first team of alumni was made up of players from the English Access Microscholarship Program Alumni, while the second was formed by alumni of all other programs including, but not limited to, Fulbright, International Visitor Leadership Program, Youth Leadership and E-teacher programs.
The tournament was held at one of the Embassy’s partners, Lycée de Kigali; a school that is currently hosting an Access Program.
In the official opening, the Acting Public Affairs Officer, Melanie Edwards, thanked all players and welcomed the alumni and embassy staff who came to cheer for the their teams.
The tourney was arranged in a double elimination format. To kick-off the tournament, the Embassy staff (team A) played with the Rwanda US Alumni (all programs) team. The Embassy team won 35-24.
Following a series of preliminary and semi-final matches, the Access Alumni emerged undefeated beating the Embassy (team A) in the finals and emerging as the tournament champions.
Everyone enjoyed the event and are already anticipating the next tournament.
State Alumni are Rwandan professionals and leaders who have participated in a State Department exchange program such as the International Visitor Leadership Program, Fulbright Program, Humphrey Program, Teacher Excellence Awards, English Access Micro scholarship Program and others.
