Second Passport

Current regulations reflect the long-standing policy of the Department of State that no person should be in possession of more than one valid, or potentially valid, U.S. passport at any time unless specifically authorized by the Department of State.

On occasion, the Department of State will make an exception to this policy for individuals who travel extensively and often for business purposes. These second passports are issued for a validity of two years provided a valid justification for issuance exists. The issuance of a second valid passport should be considered an exception to the regulations, and is to be approved on an individual basis only where justified.

Circumstances in which the Department of State will generally approve issuance of a second fee passport are when:

  • An individual travels so frequently that their passport is needed both for travel and submission for foreign visa applications simultaneously. For example, you have confirmed travel to India and Russia in the same general timeframe and need visas for both trips.
  • A foreign country will deny a visa or entry to the bearer of a passport containing markings or visas showing travel to certain other countries.

Approval and issuance of a second passport is not automatic and may require additional processing time.

Please review the following five steps before submitting your application.

Step 1 - Complete the Form DS-82, Application for a U.S. Passport

 The form must be printed on separate sheets of paper; do not print this form on front and back of the same sheet. Click here for Form DS-82 (PDF 73 KB).

Step 2 - Supporting Documents

You are required to furnish:

  • Your valid 10 year regular passport;
  • Your 2 year second passport (if applicable);
  • A completed "Statement in Support of Application for Second Passport" (PDF 14 KB) and
  • A written statement from your employer on company letterhead justifying the need for a second passport and stating the bearer's understanding that any loss or theft of either passport will be reported immediately to the nearest Consulate, Embassy, or passport agency;
  • Supporting evidence to show continuing need for a second passport. Examples of this may include proof of confirmed travel arrangements that cannot be completed with the use of your primary passport.

Step 3 - Pay the Applicable Fee

The application fee is $110.00.  Please note that the fee is a non-refundable processing fee and is retained by the Department of State whether or not the passport is issued.

Step 4 - Passport Photographs

Applicants must provide one passport photograph: The Embassy will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements.

Vending machine photographs and photographs printed on a home computer are unacceptable.

Step 5 - Submitting the Application

You are required to apply for the passport in person through a pre-arranged appointment. On scheduling an appointment, you will receive a Confirmation Sheet. Please print this page and bring it with you to the interview.
