U.S. Embassy commemorates World AIDS Day
On December 3, 2011, in commemoration of World Aids Day, U.S. Embassy Khartoum sponsored a one day seminar “Together for free and safe community from HIV/AIDS” in order to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS among Internally Displaced Persons in the Khartoum area. IDP representatives included community leaders, youth, teachers, religious leaders and women rights activists. The workshop included a presentations on HIV/AIDS transmission and protection and the role of the family and the community in the treatment of HIV infected individuals. These were followed by a discussion among the participants where they could offer their own comments and perspectives. The event was organized by a local NGO NuWeda which focuses on women’s issues.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
On 20 November 2011, Ambassador Mary Yates, American Embassy Charge d'Affaires, visited the Center for Training and Protection of Women and Child’s Rights (SEEMA) to help celebrate the organization’s “16 DAYS OF ACTIVISIM AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN” which coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, commemorated on 25 November. The 16 Days of Activism that will lead up to Human Rights Day on 10 December. Ambassador Yates met with Center Director Nahid Gabralla about the organization’s ongoing efforts to end violence against Women and Children and examined some of the art work that the Center has sponsored. She then met with some survivors of violence who related their stories to her. The visit was concluded by Ambassador Yates’ remarks, expressing American commitment to the campaign to end the violence and the Embassy’s support for SEEMA.

Charge Ambassador Mary Yates Commemorates Veterans Day
On November 13, Charge Ambassador Mary Yates, participated in a service of remembrance, along with other representatives from the diplomatic community, to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. The event was hosted by British Ambassador Nicholas Kay at the Khartoum War Cemetery where Ambassador Yates laid a wreath at the Cross of Sacrifice. The service was conducted by the Rev. Hassan Al Fil , Acting Dean of all Saints Cathedral, Khartoum who said “Let us remember …those who have died for their country in war, those whom we knew, and those whose memory we treasure and all who have lived and died in the service of mankind… Let us pledge ourselves anew to the service of God and all humanity; that we may help, encourage and comfort others nd support those working for the relief of the needy and for the peace and welfare of the nations.”

CDA Ambassador Yates vistis Ahfad University for women
On November 1, Charge Ambassador Mary Yates visited Afhad University for Women where she met with its President, Dr. Gasim Badri and members of his staff and visited the university library. Ambassador Yates was briefed on the university’s many programs aimed at women’s education and empowerment. The U.S. government has awarded the university two grants, one from USAID and the other from the State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs and the Secretary's Office of Global Women's Issues’ Africa-Women, Peace and Security Initiative.

Consular Section hosts a welcome reception
On September 28, 2011, the Consular Section, U.S. Embassy Khartoum hosted a welcome reception to introduce the newly appointed consul , Katherine L. Estes. The goal of the event, which included colleagues from other missions in Khartoum in addition to important local contacts of the Consular Section, was to establish and strengthen professional relationships.

Public Affairs Section’s Annual Press and Media Soiree
On September 22, Ambassador Mary Yates attended the Public Affairs Section’s annual press and media soiree. The reception brought together reporters and editors from both the Sudanese and the local international press community and included press contacts from other embassies as well.

Annual reception for State Alumni
On March 23, The U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section hosted its annual reception for State Alumni, those individuals who have participated over the years in all the various Department of State and USAID exchange programs. »

Journalists workshop
PAS Khartoum inaugurated a training workshop for Sudanese journalists on March 16. 22 Sudanese journalists, journalism teachers and students participated in the first DVC of a seven-part series. The workshops will be led by Voice of America correspondent and speaker Lisa Bryant. The first session focused on how to write a proper journalistic reporting article. Future workshop topics will include Journalism Ethics, Writing Skills for Print Media, Interviewing Techniques, Investigative Reporting, and Reporting in a Challenging Media Environment.

Embassy engagement with Sudanese Women Society
On March 11, Embassy Khartoum hosted a digital video conference (DVC) with Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero, to begin an Embassy engagement series with Sudanese women. The event, entitled, “Women’s Role in Social Change,”, was held in association with International Women’s Day. Over sixty Sudanese women leaders attended the event representing government, academia, NGOs, activists and youth.
