Following a visit by Ambassador Christopher Hill to the region, Dhi Qar PRT's Cultural Affairs Section, in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, organized a five-day professional development training program for thirty enthusiastic, local English teachers. The training took place at the Mittica Training Center and involved participants chosen by the Director General of Education. An English as a Second Language (ESL) Specialist was brought in from the United States to conduct the workshop. The course adopted the University of Oregon program "Shaping the Way We Teach English: Successful Practices Around the World," a tried and tested method that has been popular all over Iraq. After completing the course, the local trainees were tasked to train their colleagues on how to implement the "Shaping" methods in order to develop an even larger number of effective language teachers in the province.
