Farmington, New Mexico

Farmington is located in far northwestern New Mexico near the Four Corners conjunction of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. It is the largest city in the region with a population of approximately 44,000 and has an elevation of 5,395 feet. Founded in 1901 at the confluence of the San Juan, Animas, and La Plata Rivers, Farmington is the business hub for northwestern New Mexico with coal, natural gas, oil, and tourism all being important. Regarding OSM, several coal mines are in operation to the west and southwest of the city. Farmington is home to the two-year San Juan College and also to the Connie Mack World Series of Baseball. It is about 180 miles from Albuquerque.

Some well-known physical and cultural features in the area are Shiprock Peak, Aztec Ruins National Monument, Navajo Lake, and Mesa Verde National Park. Durango, Colorado is about an hour north, and not much farther away are the San Juan Mountains with numerous peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation. Nearby Native American lands include the Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation, and the Southern Ute Indian Reservation.

Farmington has a high desert arid climate with about 8 inches of annual precipitation, 14 inches of snowfall, low humidity, and abundant sunshine. Precipitation is greatest from mid-summer to early fall and is mainly due to afternoon thunderstorm activity. In summer, high temps average around 90 with lows in the upper 50’s. In winter, high temps average the lower 40’s with lows in the upper teens.
