Infrastructure & Energy

The earthquake left more than a million people homeless and destroyed much of the public infrastructure in Port-au-Prince.  USAID is helping low-income residents in heavily damaged communities through projects that provide temporary short-term employment and support economic development with investments in new housing.  We are also helping to move the 10 million cubic meters of rubble generated by the earthquake, clearing land that must be prepared for reconstruction.

Additionally, USAID will assist the Government of Haiti in its efforts to improve access to housing finance and strengthen building codes.  Economic infrastructure activities will include investments to improve Haiti’s ports and energy sector.  Developing the ports and providing assistance to the regulating authorities will further the Haitian Government’s efforts to expand economic activity outside of Port-au-Prince and into the priority economic corridors.

Rebuilding Haiti’s infrastructure is a long-term, collaborative effort, but one that is critical to the development of Haiti in years to come.  Read more about our programs below.
