Mission
Provides real-time space weather data supporting National Agencies and DoD operators, warfighters, and decisionmakers by expertly maintaining and vigilantly operating worldwide solar radio observing systems.
Key Functions
Network provides 24/7 monitoring of the sun.
As part of the Solar Electro-Optical Network (SEON), the Radio Solar observatories provide timely, accurate solar alerts and analyses of the sun's radio emission.
The network consists of four radio telescopes sites around the globe:
· Detachment 1, Learmonth, Australia
· Detachment 2, Sagamore Hill, Mass.
· Detachment 5, Palehua, Hawaii
· Contract Site, San Vito, Italy
Solar Analysts monitor the Radio Interference Measurement Set (RIMS) and Solar Radio Spectrograph (SRS). The RIMS consists of two antennas, three dishes (3', 8', and 28') and 8 discrete frequencies(15.4 GHz, 8800, 4995, 2695, 1415, 610, 410, and 245 MHz). The SRS consists of two antennas; the Semi-Bicone (25-75 MHz) and Log-Periodic (75-180 MHz).
When solar energy is observed over threshold levels solar analysts transmit burst and/or sweep reports to the 2nd Weather Squadron Space Weather Flight at the Air Force Weather Agency, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. The flight provides mission-tailored analyses, forecasts and warnings used for mission planning and environmental situational awareness by national agencies, Department of Defense operators, warfighters and decision makers.
