Brig. Gen. John F. “Jeff” Newell III is the Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs for Asia, Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He is responsible for regional planning and policy, and for the implementation of the National Security Strategy for Asia-Pacific, Central, South, Northeast and Southeast Asia regions, supporting the commanders of U.S. Pacific Command and U.S. Central Command in the global war on terrorism. Additionally, he provides politico-military advice to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Command Authorities.
General Newell entered the Air Force in August 1986 after receiving his commission through AFROTC at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His operational flying experience includes special operations and air mobility, with assignments in the MC-130E Combat Talon, and the C-130H. His command assignments include the 374th Airlift Wing at Yokota Air Base, Japan; 12th Operations Group at Randolph AFB, Texas, and the 39th Airlift Squadron at Dyess AFB, Texas. He served in various staff assignments, including the CSAF Executive Action Group, the Air Staff Directorate of Strategic Plans, and as the Air Force Aide to the President of the United States. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Air Force School of Advanced Airpower Studies, and served as a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
Prior to his current assignment, General Newell was the Director, Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of Staff Executive Action Group, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
