24th Air Force UnitsThe establishment of 24th Air Force, under Air Force Space Command, enables cross-domain synergy, while aligning common technical expertise, to present Air Force cyber forces to the joint fight. Consolidating cyberspace combat forces within a cyber-focused numbered air force emphasizes their operational nature, establishes a nexus of existing Air Force combat experience in the domain, and allows flexibility for future growth. 688th Information Operations Wing - "The Art of the Possible"
The 688th Information Operations Wing is located at Lackland AFB, Texas. It was originally activated as the 6901st Special Communications Center on 1 July 1953. The following month, the 6901st was redesignated as the Air Force Special Communications Center. On 1 July 1975, it was then redesignated as the Air Force Electronic Warfare Center (AFEWC). The AFEWC's electronic combat and technical expertise contributed to Operation DESERT STORM command and control warfare (C2W) successes.

Air Force successes in exploiting enemy information systems during Operation DESERT STORM, led to the realization that the strategies and tactics of C2W could be expanded to the entire information spectrum and be implemented as information warfare (IW). In response, the unit was redesignation as the Air Force Information Operations Wing (AFIOC) on 10 September 1993 and contained technical skills from the former AFEWC and Air Force Cryptologic Support Center's Securities Directorate (AFCSC/SR). On 18 August 2009, the AFIOC was redesignated to the 688 IOW.

Coupled with AFCSC/SR, technical skills in command, control, communications, and computer systems security, the merger of the organizations in creating the 688th Information Operations Wing provides a solid baseline for the C2W mission. Click here for more information.
