NRI to Lead New Five-Year Effort to Develop Post-CMOS Electronics

NIST announced today the selection of the Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI), a collaboration of several key firms in the semiconductor industry, to support university-centered research for the development of after-the-next-generation “nanoelectronics” technology. NRI members include GLOBALFOUNDRIES, IBM, Intel, Micron Technology & Texas Instruments.

NNI Launches Nanotechnology Signature Initiative on Nanosensors

The fifth NSI will accelerate the development of nano-enabled sensors and nanomaterial sensing. The NNI agencies recognize the considerable potential for nanotechnology to open the door to the development of inexpensive, portable devices that can rapidly detect, identify, and quantify biological and chemical substances.

GAO Report on Nanotechnology EHS Research Released Today

The agencies participating in the NNI received the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) Report to the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Nanotechnology: Improved Performance Information Needed for Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Research.

NNI Member Agencies Develop New Nanotechnology Signature Initiative

Organized under the auspices of the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), the NKI will stimulate the development of models, simulation tools, and databases that enable the prediction of specific properties and characteristics of nanoscale materials and phenomena.

PCAST Report: NNI Continues to be a “Successful Cooperative Venture”

In this report, PCAST finds that “substantial progress” has been made in expanding the efforts to enable commercialization and coordination with industry. Dr. Robert Pohanka joins the NNCO after serving as the Director of the Defense Venture Catalyst Initiative (DeVenCI), where he led and directed the strategy for finding private sector technologies, developed independently of DoD, and transitioned them to DoD Research, Development and Acquisition.

NanoDays-- a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering-- is organized by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net), and takes place nationally from March 24 - April 1, 2012.

NRC Report Maps Well with NNI EHS Research Strategy

The agencies participating in the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) appreciate the National Research Council’s (NRC) recently released report. It is unfortunate that the NRC report was already completed and in peer review when the NNI released its EHS Research Strategy in October 2011, which precluded the NRC from considering the NNI’s strategy in its deliberations.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Announces the Initiation of a Public Private Industry Partnership on Translation of Nanotechnology in Cancer (TONIC)

An immediate consequence of this effort will be the formation of a consortium involving government and pharmaceutical, and biotechnology companies. This consortium will evaluate promising nanotechnology platforms and facilitate their successful translation from academic research to clinical environment.
