Issue 21 – November 2012 NCEHC Releases IESS Data in New Dashboard Format. This issue highlights national 2012 data from the Ethics Consultant Proficiency Assessment Tool; notes the inclusion of ethics in VA’s new SES Appraisal System; and reports on success of FY 2012 IE program goals. Also includes considerations when adding a Veteran or other non-federal employee to your IE council, and an announcement of the VA/University of Chicago Ethics Consultation Fellowship.
Issue 20 - September 2012 Advancing Ethical Leadership Across VHA; Planning for Enhanced ECWeb. This issue highlights programs at two VA facilities - South Texas Veterans HCS, Temple, TX, and Harry S. Truman Memorial Hospital, Columbia, MO - aimed at strengthening ethical leadership in VHA. Also discussed is a recent evaluation of ECWeb and plans for an enhanced version of that database. The updated ECWeb will be combined with a new PEWeb section that supports ethics quality improvement; together, these two sections will form a comprehensive IEWeb.
Issue 19 - July 2012 IntegratedEthics Staff Survey; Celebrating Compliance and Ethics Week; 2011 Nelson Award Winner. With the 2012 IntegratedEthics Staff Survey approaching, this issue highlights ways in which facilities and VISNs can boost participation in the Survey. We also cover ways in which VHA facilities celebrated Compliance and Ethics Week 2012. Finally, the issue profiles Dr. Ware Kuschner, winner of the 2011 William A. Nelson Award for Excellence in Health Care Ethics.
Issue 18 - June 2012 IntegratedEthics Symposium; Informed Consent for HIV Testing. This issue highlights a recent IntegratedEthics symposium hosted by VISN 17. The conference drew over 200 participants from VHA, Army, and non-government hospitals. Topics included organizational ethics; ethics, privacy, and social media; and the impact of religion, culture, and race on informed consent. This issue also highlights National HIV Testing Day (June 27, 2012) and discusses VA policy for obtaining and documenting informed consent for HIV testing.
Issue 17 - April 2012 National Compliance and Ethics Week: An NCEHC and CBI Partnership. This issue celebrates 2012 National Compliance and Ethics Week, May 6-12, a partnership between the National Center for Ethics in Health Care and the Office of Compliance and Business Integrity. The theme of this year's observance is "Think Integrity First." Several articles discuss activities which may be appropriate for use by facilities in their Compliance and Ethics Week activities. Other articles highight the firs year of the joint VA/University of Chicago Fellowships in Health Care Ethics Consultation, IE as a cornerstone of VA's succession planning, and announcements of future national IE activities.
Issue 16 - March 2012 Two Promising Practices and Redesigned Training Program for Function Coordinators. This issue highlights the Ethics Recognition Program for employees at the Boise VAMC and the personal approach taken by the ethics consultation team at the Beckley VAMC to introduce their service to the facility. Also discussed is NCEHC's recently revised IntegratedEthics Function Coordinator Orientation training.
Issue 15 - October 2011 Building and Spreading Ethical Leadership Enhancement Initiatives: What Works? Five facilities share their experiences implementing Ethical Leadership Enhancement initiatives and involving facility leaders in the IntegratedEthics program.
Issue 14 - June 2011 Spreading Promising Practices that Improve Ethics Quality: IntegratedEthics Competitive Enhancement Grants: During FY 2010 and 2011 a total of 14 field-based IntegratedEthics programs were awarded competitive enhancement funding. This issue details the accomplishments of two FY10 grantees, VISN 10 and the New Mexico VA Health Care System.
Issue 13 - April 2011 Meeting the Objectives of Ethics Consultation Through Dedication, Process, and Leadership Support: Four Facilities Share Promising Practices. This issue focuses on what makes the ethics consultation services successful in four facilities.
Issue 12 - December 2010 Developing the Requisite Structures and Supports for a Robust Preventive Ethics Program. In this issue two facilities and one VISN describe innovative approaches they developed to build effective PE programs.
Issue 11 - October 2010 The Patient Advocacy Program's Invaluable Role in Linking Veterans to IntegratedEthics. In this issue two facility IEPOs discuss the advantages of involving the facility Patient Advocate in the IntegratedEthics program.
Issue 10 - July 2010 What's IntegratedEthics Again? Communicating Your IE Program to All Audiences at Your Facility. In this issue six IE team members describe ongoing efforts to inform and educate their facility communities about the IE program.
Issue 9 - April 2010 Integrating Ethics into Facility Culture: Five Leadership Examples. In this issue we explore promising strategies used in five facilities, incorporating aspects of the Ethical Leadership Compass into decisions made by facility leaders.
Issue 8 - March 2010 On Joining the IntegratedEthics Team: Five New IE Members Share Experiences and Insights. Every facility faces staff turnover, and the same thing happens with facility IE programs. Key IE staff rotate to new opportunities and new IE team members join the program. This edition focuses on the importance of succession planning, and chronicles the stories of five VHA staffers who recently joined their facilities' IE teams.
Issue 7 - December 2009 Operationalizing IntegratedEthics At a VISN Level: The Role of VISN Conferences. As IntegratedEthics enters its third year since implementation, many program staff are focusing on broader dissemination and integration strategies. Others continue to seek basic guidance and education to develop the program. This edition looks at the efforts of three VISNs which met these differing needs via network-wide IE conferences.
Issue 6 - July 2009 Preventive Ethics in Action: Using the ISSUES Approach to Improve Ethics Quality in Facility Settings. Five facilities describe their work on specific ISSUES cycles and how that work led to improved ethics quality at their facilities. Includes an accompanying chart detailing the contributors' ISSUES cycles.
Issue 5 - May 2009 Educating Your New Employees: Strategies for Introducing IntegratedEthics at New Employee Orientations. Eleven IntegratedEthics program staff members from ten VHA facilities contributed to this discussion on how to use New Employee Orientations (NEOs) to introduce new hires to IntegratedEthics. Includes "Anatomy of an IntegratedEthics Presentation at New Employee Orientations" and suggested conversation starters for your NEO.
Issue 4 - March 2009 Beyond the Workshop: Five Attendees Share Knowledge, Experiences From the Ethics Consultation Beyond the Basics Workshop includes interviews with five participants in the Beyond the Basics Workshops for ethics consultants, their impressions of the workshops, and how they used their new knowledge when they returned to their facilities.
Issue 3 - November 2008 IE Retreat: Lexington Takes a Day Out to Move Forward looks at an all day offsite retreat for IE team and Council members organized by Lexington VAMC, providing basic IE training and "jump starting" the program within the facility. And, Did You Know . . . Intranet vs. Internet. A look at the intranet and internet sites maintained by the National Center for Ethics in Health Care, the differences and similarities, and ethics resources available through the sites.
Issue 2 - September 2008 Louisville Develops Prototype Intranet Site for Dissemination to VISN 9 Facilities describes how the IE team in VAMC Louisville established an IE area not only for their facility's intranet, but also created a template that has since been adapted for use by their VISN as well as other VISN 9 facilities. And, The Tale of Three Facilities. Three IE teams share their experiences with establishing and maintaining an IE area on the intranets of their respective facilities (Central Texas VHCS, Temple, TX; G.V. [Sonny] Montgomery VAMC, Jackson, MS; and VA Puget Sound HCS, Seattle, WA).
