NCEHC Releases IESS Data in New Dashboard Format. This issue highlights national 2012 data from the Ethics Consultant Proficiency Assessment Tool; notes the inclusion of ethics in VA’s new SES Appraisal System; and reports on success of FY 2012 IE program goals. Also includes considerations when adding a Veteran or other non-federal employee to your IE council, and an announcement of the VA/University of Chicago Ethics Consultation Fellowship.
Issue 20 - September 2012
Advancing Ethical Leadership Across VHA; Planning for Enhanced ECWeb. This issue highlights programs at two VA facilities - South Texas Veterans HCS, Temple, TX, and Harry S. Truman Memorial Hospital, Columbia, MO - aimed at strengthening ethical leadership in VHA. Also discussed is a recent evaluation of ECWeb and plans for an enhanced version of that database. The updated ECWeb will be combined with a new PEWeb section that supports ethics quality improvement; together, these two sections will form a comprehensive IEWeb.

IntegratedEthics Staff Survey; Celebrating Compliance and Ethics Week; 2011 Nelson Award Winner. With the 2012 IntegratedEthics Staff Survey approaching, this issue highlights ways in which facilities and VISNs can boost participation in the Survey. We also cover ways in which VHA facilities celebrated Compliance and Ethics Week 2012. Finally, the issue profiles Dr. Ware Kuschner, winner of the 2011 William A. IntegratedEthics Symposium; Informed Consent for HIV Testing. This issue highlights a recent IntegratedEthics symposium hosted by VISN 17. The conference drew over 200 participants from VHA, Army, and non-government hospitals. Topics included organizational ethics; ethics, privacy, and social media; and the impact of religion, culture, and race on informed consent. This issue also highlights National HIV Testing Day (June 27, 2012) and discusses VA policy for obtaining and documenting informed consent for HIV testing.

National Compliance and Ethics Week: An NCEHC and CBI Partnership. This issue celebrates 2012 National Compliance and Ethics Week, May 6-12, a partnership between the National Center for Ethics in Health Care and the Office of Compliance and Business Integrity. The theme of this year's observance is "Think Integrity First." Several articles discuss activities which may be appropriate for use by facilities in their Compliance and Ethics Week activities. Other articles highight the firs year of the joint VA/University of Chicago Fellowships in Health Care Ethics Consultation, IE as a cornerstone of VA's succession planning, and announcements of future national IE activities.
