Running on E

n honor of National Energy Awareness Month and Monday’s Energy Awareness open house (9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at McGill Training Center), I’m going to keep things short this week.

Besides, I’m pretty much drained.

Not like our editor Joyce Brayboy, after completing the Baltimore Marathon on Saturday.

More like the batteries in my remote control.

We — the remote and I — suffered through the worst weekend in my extensive, sports-viewing career last week, and I’m spent.

On Saturday, Michigan lost to Michigan State and the Tigers got squeezed by eventual World Series runner-up, Texas. Then on Sunday, the Cowboys found yet another way to lose.

It’s almost — scrub that. It is embarrassing to think about the amount of emotional effort that I — a 37-year-old father of three, husband of one, new home owner and grad student — used while watching pretty much every minute of each of those games.

But that is the life I choose, and sometimes that choice means taking things down a notch after a hard week.

Besides, nobody wants to hear my theory on how my wife is a walking sports hex, though I do plan to sit down and seriously contemplate the role and/or existence of those proverbial “sports gods.”

I’m also going to explore whether it’s appropriate to root for the team that beats your team and can fans use we when describing their squads.

Just not today.

Today, my sports psyche still feels like it’s been bashed in by a lead-filled thunderstick. So I just need to watch some Grey’s, maybe play with YJ3 and recharge.

Unfortunately, as you know, the next weekend — and all that potential wasted energy — comes quicker than you think.
