Citigroup Breach of Security - GSA SmartPay Cards NOT Affected

June 13, 2011

Yesterday, June 9th, the NY Times ran an article discussing a breach of security within Citigroup. The article stated that Citigroup has acknowledged that unidentified hackers gained access to the data of hundreds of thousands of credit card customers in North America. We have received several inquiries as to whether GSA SmartPay charge cards were affected by this data breach. OCCM contacted Citibank yesterday and confirmed that GSA SmartPay charge cards WERE NOT AFFECTED by the security breach. OCCM received the following statement from Citibank:

During routine monitoring, Citi recently discovered unauthorized access to Citi’s Account Online, Citi’s consumer credit card portal.  I am writing to confirm that no commercial card or commercial prepaid card programs were impacted and no commercial or prepaid cardholder information was involved.  A limited number – roughly one percent – of Citi North America consumer bankcard customers’ account information (such as name, account number and contact information including email address) was viewed. These customer’s social security number, date of birth, card expiration date and card security code (CVV) were not compromised. Citi is in the process of contacting those consumer bankcard customers whose information was impacted and has implemented enhanced procedures to prevent a recurrence of this type of event.

Please ensure that your AOPCs and cardholders are aware that their cards have not been affected. We have included a link to the article below for your convenience:
