Body Composition Testing

Purpose: Body composition testing includes calculating body fat percentage and body mass index (BMI). An accurate body fat measurement will help identify level of risk of various metabolic diseases. Various methods can be used to determine lean muscle mass compared to fat. These methods may include the use of skinfold calipers (a painless tool used to measure the amount of fat underneath the skin), bioelectrical impedance (the use of a painless, low-voltage electrical current applied to the body), ultrasound (sound waves to measure fat under the skin) or BOD POD® (air displacement measurement to capture body fat percentage).

BMI calculation measures how well a participant maintains their body weight based on their height and also assists in determining metabolic risk.

Preparation: Participants are advised to wear tight fitting clothing (spandex, Speedo, sports bra, etc.) No consumption of foods or beverages (besides water) for two hours prior to the appointment. Be well hydrated; drink plenty of water prior to your appointment. Complete the pre-test screening on Soldier Fitness Tracker.

Time Expected: 10-15 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the results mean?

Body composition can be helpful in several situations, including getting regular measurements of fat and fat free mass to monitor how body composition changes over time, which can assist in determining the most beneficial exercise and diet plans.

How do you decide which test to perform?

The method of body fat calculation performed will be based on the preparation and preference of the client. For BOD POD, which is the most accurate method available at the Army Wellness Center, the client must wear spandex or a Speedo and should be comfortable in a confined space for 1 minute intervals. Ultrasound and skinfold caliper testing requires accessing three to seven skinfold sites on the upper and lower body for quick measurements.
