Processing Times

The consular officer interviewing you will normally determine at the conclusion of the interview whether you qualify for the visa. The average visa processing time for successful applicants is two business days, but some applicants may require additional processing time. This may take up to several months.

Processing time of specific cases can vary due to individual circumstances and other special requirements. We strongly recommend that applicants not make nonrefundable travel arrangements until they have actually received their visa. Visa applicants should never assume their application will be automatically approved. Visas will not be issued based on pre-booked airline tickets.

Since each case is unique we cannot say how long your application may take to process in advance. A U.S. visa application cannot be expedited so we recommend that prospective travelers schedule an appointment well in advance.

We recommend that applicants leave their passports at the embassy for the duration of processing. If you will need your passport while the application is under processing you can take your passport after the interview and then return it when your application is completed. Your visa will normally be issued two business days after our receipt of the passport.

NOTE: We treat “emergency” cases as appropriate. If you have questions about an “emergency” case, please send an e-mail describing the situation to oslovisa@state.gov.

Once processed, your passport and visa will be returned by the method of delivery you chose when you came in for your interview.

Delivery can take several days so it is important to schedule your appointment well in advance of your travel; check with your local post office for estimated delivery times.

Student Visa Applicants

Student and exchange visitor visas may require an additional 1-3 business days for SEVIS verification. To avoid this please make sure you pay your SEVIS fee at least three business days before you come for your interview. Students normally receive information regarding the SEVIS fee when they receive their documents from their US school. The fee should be paid online through the Department of Homeland Security's website.

Petition-Based Visa Applicants

Work visa categories may take 1-3 additional business days for petition verification.

Applicants who have been Previously Arrested or Convicted

If you have ever arrested and/or have a criminal conviction, have a medical ineligibility, or have been denied entry into or deported from the United States you will be required to furnish documents relating to your situation in support of your application.

The process normally takes 6 months, but can take longer under certain circumstances.

NOTE:  The processing times quoted are approximate and cannot be guaranteed. It is important that you keep this in mind when applying for the visa. It is not be possible to expedite a visa application at the US embassy.
