Iraqi –American Partnership: Electrical System Improvements to the Shattil Aa’ma Medical Clinic Improved Medical Care for Area Residents

MAYSAN | August 23, 2010

The Maysan PRT, the US Army and officials from the Shattil Aa’ma Medical Clinic, working in partnership, installed and connected a USD 12,000 transformer at the Shattil Aa’ma Medical Clinic, near the sub-district of Musharrah, on July 29th. The transformer project means a more reliable power supply for the clinic allowing the clinic’s medical staff to better assist those in need. The new transformer will also ensure more reliable power to the adjacent village.

The Shattil Aa’ma Medical Clinic services a large number of the 20,000 residents in the rural areas surrounding Musharrah and specializes in natal and pediatric care. The clinic also provides basic first aid services and emergency medical care to residents before being transferred to a larger clinic in Musharrah. The connection of the clinic to the main power grid has reduced its dependence on diesel fuel for the generator and will enhance the standard of care that will be provided. This improvement to the electrical system of the Shattil Aa’ma Medical Clinic was paid for by the people of the United States with the material assistance of the United States Army and the Maysan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT). Overall, the U.S. government has invested more than 365 million USD in Maysan Province since 2003. Currently, there are 30 million USD in U.S.-funded projects underway in Maysan.
