Navigating MPAs
MPA Center Produces Updated "MPA Booklet Chart" for Monterey Bay
The MPA Center has developed an updated MPA Booklet Chart, targeting ocean users in the Monterey Bay region. The Booklet Chart is a user friendly version of a nautical chart that also provides an overlay of all MPAs in the Monterey Bay area. To download a copy, click here. Working with NOAA's Office of Coast Survey, the MPA Center is incorporating key information about the location, purpose, and allowable activities in existing MPAs into NOAA's navigational charts and products. By better informing maritime users about MPAs, this information will lead to greater protection and awareness. Coast Pilot The U.S. Coast Pilot has been continuously in print by the federal government since 1867. Ships of 1,600 or more gross tons and large U.S. Naval vessels are required to carry both the Coast Pilot and the local NOAA charts for their area of transit. Many smaller vessels also carry the Coast Pilot. The Coast Pilot is a series of nine regional books that include supplemental information difficult to portray on a nautical chart. The MPA Center has compiled information on MPAs in each region for inclusion in Coast Pilot, including rules or regulations that affect mariners (e.g. fishing, vessel traffic, anchoring, etc). Electronic Navigational Charts The MPA Center supports NOAA's Office of Coast Survey (OCS) in their efforts to add environmental information, including MPAs, to future Electronic Navigational Charts® (NOAA ENCs). ENCs are vector electronic charts, one of NOAA's newest chart products. They conform to S-57, the International Hydrographic Organization's (IHO) international exchange format and can be used with internationally approved Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS). NOAA is working through the IHO to develop international standards for displaying environmental information -- such as MPAs and coral reefs -- on future versions of ENCs. In fact, the IHO has approved the ability to collect and display MPAs on ENCs, subsequent to 2012, the date when the IHO's new geospatial standard for hydrographic data is approved for general use. NOAA's PocketChart™ is a special-purpose map for recreational boaters. This inexpensive, introductory charting product has a miniature NOAA nautical chart on one side, and safety, boating, and educational information on the reverse side. The MPA Center has developed a pilot "MPA Pocket Chart" for the Monterey Bay region, focusing on highlighting the diverse MPAs in the region to help users appreciate and protect their marine resources. MPA Booklet Charts The NOAA BookletChart™ is an experimental product that you can print at home for free. They are made to help recreational boaters locate themselves on the water. The MPA Center has developed an MPA Booklet Chart for Monterey Bay to provide more detail to recreational users. The Booklet Chart is a user friendly version of a nautical chart aimed at ocean users that also provides an overlay of all MPAs in the Monterey Bay area. It includes a key with specific information, including restrictions, for each MPA depicted on the chart. Information on the marine resources of Monterey Bay and how individuals can help protect these resources is also shown. To download a copy, click here.
