The Lynnhaven River Oyster exhibit highlights the story of one of the crown jewels of the Tidewater Virginia seafood industry and a key species in restoring the Lynnhaven River. This photo exhibit traces the history of human use of this bivalve, from the rise of the once profitable fishery through its collapse and recovery. While experiencing the Lynnhaven River Oyster exhibit, visitors can:

  • Learn how Virginia Indians protected their feet when they walked on oyster reefs to harvest the shellfish.
  • Discover the price of a bushel of "Lynnhaven Beauties" in 1881.
  • Marvel at the size of a typical oyster of the last century.
