Project Safe Neighborhoods
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is a nationwide grant program sponsored by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to reduce gun crime by networking existing local programs that target gun crime and providing those programs with additional tools necessary to be successful. The Project Safe Neighborhoods program is designed to create safe neighborhoods by reducing gang and gun violence and crime, and sustaining that reduction over time.
At the request of the DOJ and the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency performs the role of fiscal agent for the District of Columbia PSN program. In that role, and guided by an interagency agreement, CSOSA ensures fiscal accountability and that funds are expended as approved by DOJ.
The DC Project Safe Neighborhoods program works to reduce incidences of gun and gang violence in the District of Columbia's most afflicted neighborhoods. This objective is accomplished through a multi-faceted approach encompassing federal and local law enforcement efforts combined with the intervention and prevention activities of local community-based partners.
All efforts are led by the local PSN Task Force and governed by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The PSN task force ensures the implementation of the program's five core elements – partnerships, strategic planning, training, outreach, and accountability.
