The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary offers 842 square miles of boating opportunity. Whether your final destination is the sanctuary or you are transiting the sanctuary to reach another destination, boaters should remain vigilant to avoid striking fishing gear, other boaters, and marine animals such as whales, sea turtles, and basking sharks. In particular, boaters should familiarize themselves with the whale watching guidelines to avoid harmful encounters with marine mammals. The sanctuary recommends that boaters limit their vessel's speed to 20 knots to allow for sufficient time to avoid a marine animal that suddenly appears.
