    Embassy-sponsored conference on participatory democracy and elections systems

    2012 IVLP Grassroots Democracy and Elections alumni Alhousseini Maiga led an Embassy-sponsored conference on participatory democracy and elections systems. He highlighted aspects of the U.S. elections system that would benefit Malians, such as selecting candidates based on their qualifications and platform, a true separation of powers limiting the President’s authority, and especially civil society participation in the elections through vote observation and civil society organizations. He said he “was particularly impressed by the American sense of patriotism,” that leads people to vote because they love their country and want to choose its leader.

    International Students Virtual Fair

    As part of the celebration of the International Education Week, the Information Resources Center in Bamako, hosted a virtual fair on November 13, 2012 at the American Embassy. During the sessions, thirty three (33) Malian students had an opportunity to visit a number of American universities.  

  • Civic Education
    Cojem, Youth Association Focuses on Education and Building Citizenship

    A youth association focused on education and citizenship building, COJEM, in partnership with the US Embassy, launched a series of regional seminars about civic education and Islam, targeted to madrassah teachers and students, as well as youth leaders. The DCM, in her remarks, stressed the importance of civic education in establishing democracy and progress.

    On Wednesday, September 26, the Information Resource Center of the US Embassy held a book discussion using a Nouveaux Horizons title in French, Halte à la haine!. (Stop the Hate! in English.)

    Reception for a Diverse Group of Malian Artist

    The U.S. Embassy held a reception on Thursday, September 20, for a diverse group of Malian artist. More than 30 famous musicians, actors, producers, and others showed up to share two hours of exchange and social interaction with Embassy Public Affairs staff.

    On Tuesday September 18, 2012 the Public Affairs Service of the US Embassy organized a reception at the American Club on behalf of the Malian Association of Teachers of Medersa and the Association of Owners of Medersa.

    Ambassador addresses youth at graduation of Embassy foundations of democracy class

    After a 4-part seminar series on the foundations of American democracy, with comparative analysis to Mali's government, the university English Club and the Embassy co-hosted a graduation ceremony for the class participants. The course instructor, who was an Embassy volunteer, the university rector, who is a Fulbright alum, and the Ambassador all spoke, referencing Mali's recent military coup and the importance of actively applying and sharing democratic principles in today's context. The Ambassador distributed a book about the U.S. constitution to each student with their certificate of course completion.
