The American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit of the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Abidjan provides services to nearly 1500 U.S. citizens living in Cote d'Ivoire, as well as to several hundred tourists and business visitors each year. Among other things, the unit provides passport services, registers the birth of children, offers notary services, gives information on voting, and provides information to U.S. citizens visiting and residing in Cote d’Ivoire. All of these services are available at the Consular Section by appointment.
The Department of State is pleased to announce the introduction of a redesigned Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA, or Form FS-240). The redesigned CRBA, which is an official record confirming that a child born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent or parents acquired U.S. citizenship at birth and serves as proof of citizenship, has been updated with a variety of state-of-the-art security features to help prevent fraud and identity theft.
Beginning January 18, 2011, overseas posts will still document the citizenship of children born overseas to U.S.-citizen parents, but the CRBAs will be printed at our passport agencies in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and New Orleans, Louisiana, using the information provided by overseas posts. By centralizing production and eliminating the distribution of controlled blank stock throughout the world, we will help ensure uniform quality and lessen the possibility of fraud. Additionally, the Department will no longer issue the DS-1350 Certification of Report of Birth Abroad. Instead, the Department will simply provide new FS-240s in response to requests for additional, replacement, or amended CRBAs.
In order to upgrade our systems for this change, the U.S. Embassy in Cote d'Ivoire is suspending CRBA adjudication from January 1 through January 18, 2011. CRBA applications submitted during that time will be adjudicated after January 18.

The ACS Unit also provides emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in distress: when a U.S. citizen is destitute, arrested, separated from minor children, or sick. In an emergency, the Embassy Duty Officer can be reached at any time. The Duty Officer can provide information on medical facilities, on obtaining emergency funds from home, on dealing with and replacing lost/stolen items, on reporting crimes, etc.

Please note that the Embassy cannot act as a booking agent for airlines, train companies, or hotels.Travelers should inquire directly with these entities for information about cancelled flights, or other disruptions to planned travel. However, travelers who find themselves stranded or otherwise without resources or means of assistance in a true emergency situation can contact the Embassy to determine if help is available, or to be put in touch with sources of help.
The ACS unit will not be able to answer questions about visas. We will not respond to questions concerning visas to the United States, hotel or tourist information, or research questions.

New Visa Requirment

New Visa Requirement for United States Citizens traveling to Côte d’Ivoire began February 15, 2009
The Government of Côte d’Ivoire has informed the U.S. Embassy in Abidjan that a new visa policy is in effect from February 15, 2009 for citizens of the United States. U.S. citizens will need a valid Ivoirian visa as well as a passport with more than six months of remaining validity prior to arrival since the Government of Côte d’Ivoire has informed the embassy that they will not issue visas at the airport. In addition to visa and passport requirements, an international health certificate showing current yellow fever immunization is required for entry into Cote d’Ivoire. Citizens of the U.S. traveling to Côte d’Ivoire should check with the nearest Ivoirian Embassy or Consulate for details regarding the visa procedures and fees.
