January 28, 2011

On Friday, January 28, U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Mary Burce Warlick addressed the graduating class of Ministry of Interior’s first WMD training course.  U.S. Department of Justice, International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP), in coordination with Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), has completed $500,000 worth training and equipment donation to MoI’s Sector for Emergency Management, the Counter-terrorism Unit (PTJ) and the Crime Technician Center (National Crime Lab).

The primary objective of WMD course is to provide law enforcement officers with the knowledge, skills, and equipment to safely conduct an investigation at a crime scene involving WMD materials.  The course provides instruction on identifying WMD, using detection and monitoring devices, using personal protective equipment (PPE), collecting evidence in a hazardous WMD environment, and understanding how to manage a WMD incident.

The DTRA International Counterproliferation Program (ICP) is a joint initiative of the Department of Defense, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Homeland Security Bureau of Customs and Border Protection to train countries to effectively address the proliferation of weapons and materials of mass destruction.
