English Language Programs

The English Language Office (ELO) of tfhe Public Affairs section works with Turkish universities and with the Turkish Ministry of Education to help improve the teaching of English and to disseminate information on American culture and institutions. The office assists in the implementation of English Language Teaching (ELT) teacher development programs nationwide, and coordinates a sales and distribution program to make high-quality English language teaching materials and reference sources more accessible. The office works closely with the English teaching association INGED, with program directors, school administrators, and teachers from both the government and private sector to make the teaching of English more effective.

Programs and Activities

  • Teacher Development Workshops and Presentations: Previous Teacher Development Events and Handouts,Request Form (PDF 44 KB)
    on a variety of topics including: curriculum development, content-based learning, ELT methodology, American studies.
  • English Language Specialists English Language Specialists are recognized experts in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). They conduct programs with Turkish educational institutions as well as the Ministry of Education. English Language Specialists in Turkey.
  • Placement of English Language Fellows (ELFs) Placement of English Language Fellows (ELFs) for one academic year at Turkish universities or tertiary-level institutions: EL Fellows for 2011-2012, Former EL Fellows (2003-2010)
  • The Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) The Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program is designed to allow young Turkish teachers of English to teach Turkish and study at an American university for an academic year. Information about the FLTA program.
  • English Access Microscholarship Program The English Access Microscholarship Program is a Department of State initiative aimed at providing English language instruction and future prospects for underprivileged secondary school students. English Access Microscholarship Program.
  • Distribution of United States Government Produced Materials Distribution of United States government-produced materials for teacher development and the teaching of English and American culture.
