July 13, 2010

On July 13, 2010, Colonel Romualdas Petkevičius, the Lithuanian National Military Representative at Supreme Headquarters - Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), was awarded the U.S. Legion of Merit by Ambassador Anne E. Derse, in recognition of his service as Air Attaché at the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington, D.C. from 2004 to 2008.  The Legion of Merit, one of the United States' highest military honors, is awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.  Commenting on the importance of the award, Ambassador Derse said that "Colonel Petkevičius was instrumental in the full integration of Lithuanian forces in NATO during his time as Defense Attaché.  His dedication to the alliance and hard work in building lines of communication between Washington and Vilnius helped to make Lithuania integral to 21st century security."

His citation, signed by U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, reads:

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 20, 1942, has awarded the Legion of Merit (Degree of Officer) to

COLONEL ROMUALDAS PETKEVIČIUS

for exceptionally meritorious service as the Lithuanian Air Attaché, from August 2004 to August 2008.  Colonel Petkevičius' efforts greatly enhanced mutual cooperation and relations between the United States and the Lithuanian Air Forces.  He was instrumental in Lithuania's participation in the historic Strategic Airlift Capability program, which established a critical, heavy airlift capability and allowed partners in the program to provide mutual support.  His efforts in promoting stronger international ties through the Pennsylvania State Partnership laid the groundwork for new partnerships and training opportunities.  The invaluable support, leadership, and initiative displayed by Colonel Petkevičius reflect great credit upon himself, the Lithuanian Air Force, and his country.
