Statements by US Special envoy to Sudan Princeton Lyman

Statements by Ambassador Princeton Lyman, Special US Envoy to Sudan following his meeting with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mohamed Amr

Cairo, September 3, 2011

I just met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Amr. We talked about Sudan and discussed the situation there now which is worrisome because of the fighting going on in two of the states in Sudan. We also discussed our common interest in peace there and how we can collaborate to achieve this objective.

Question: Are there problems between the North and the South especially in Abbey?

Ambassador Lyman: I think the problem now is that although the fighting is taking place in the Northern Sudan, it could draw the South into it, making it even a wider war; so it is a very dangerous situation there. I think all of us are concerned about getting political negotiations starting as soon as possible.
