Ministry of Higher Education and U.S. Government Announce Establishment of Career Development Centers in Egyptian Public Universities

August 30, 2012

Cairo – The Egyptian Minister of Higher Education, Mr. Mustafa Musad, U.S. Undersecretary of State, Robert Hormats, and USAID Assistant Administrator Mara Rudman met yesterday to announce the establishment of Career Development Centers (CDCs) at 14 Egyptian university campuses.  The CDCs will be funded by the U.S. Government through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and implemented by three partner organizations:  Nahdet El Mahrousa, the American University in Cairo, and World Learning.

“The Career Development Centers will help hard-working students throughout Egypt develop skills that will prepare them for today’s job market,” said Ms. Rudman.  “The Centers also develop strong linkages with private business so that graduates can be matched with actual jobs.”

The CDCs serve students and faculty at the 14 universities.  More than 300,000 Egyptian students (20% of the total University student population) will benefit from the CDC programs.

“These Career Development Centers will go a long way towards better ensuring there is a match between the students’ skill sets and Egypt’s labor market requirements,” said U.S. State Department Undersecretary Robert Hormats.  This will help provide Egypt with a well-qualified work force in a labor market that will demand their skills.”

Undersecretary Hormats heads a delegation of senior U.S. economic officials that has been in Egypt this week to discuss ways that the United States can further support Egypt’s political and economic transition.
