Ambassador Patterson Honors Egyptian Women in Science

CAIRO— U.S. Ambassador Anne W. Patterson honored the outstanding contributions of Egyptian women in science on April 22.  The event, held at the Ambassador’s residence, also celebrated the admission of Cairo University Professor Dr. Mona Mostafa Mohamed into the State Department’s 2012 Women in Science Hall of Fame for the Middle East and North Africa, for her groundbreaking research on inflammatory breast cancer.

“On Earth Day, it is important to recognize that science and technology play a crucial role in addressing the world’s toughest environmental challenges, and that international cooperation among scientists is essential,” said Ambassador Patterson. “Whether it’s public health or civil engineering, we need everyone—men and women—involved if we want to see our quality of life improve.”

Dr. Mona Mostafa Mohamed founded the University of Cairo’s Cancer Biology Laboratory after winning the 2005 Avon Foundation International Scholar Award in Breast Cancer Research. She has taught molecular biology at Cairo University for over 20 years. Her research focuses on cell biology and virology, exploring new avenues for cancer treatment. She also collaborates closely with scientists at Wayne State University in the U.S.

“Dr. Mona Mohamed’s research on inflammatory breast cancer illustrates the important role Egyptian women are playing in global scientific research,” said Ambassador Patterson. “She is truly an inspiration and a role model, and her work benefits the lives of countless women around the world.”

Attendees included Minister of Scientific Research Nadia Zachary, along with graduate students, researchers, and development professionals.

The State Department’s Middle East and North Africa Environment, Science, Technology, and Health Office initiated a “Women in Science Hall of Fame” in 2010 to honor outstanding female scientists throughout the region.  A dozen women are selected for their accomplishments each year.
