Application for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad and US Passport

A Consular Report of Birth (CRBA) is evidence of United States citizenship, and is issued to a child born abroad to a US citizen parent or parents who meet the requirements for transmitting citizenship under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

For information on how to apply, please refer to the Information on Applying for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. CRBA applications must be made before the child's 18th birthday. We recommend that parents apply for both the CRBA and US passport as soon as possible after the child's birth. To apply for a US passport please see detailed instructions here.

If you believe you meet the transmission requirements, please make an appointment via our website. Before visiting us at the Embassy, please look at the security requirements for all visitors. You will not be allowed to enter with any of the prohibited items listed here.

Both parents and the child should appear at the interview. Please bring a valid, government-issued photo identification of non-American citizen parent. If both parents are not present at the interview, a Passport Issuance Consent Form DS-3053 must be completed by the absent parent and notarized for each child.

On the day of your interview, you will be asked to submit:

• A completed form DS-2029.
• A completed Affidavit of Parentage, Physical Presence, and Support from the US citizen parent.
• Evidence that the US citizen parent was present in the US long enough to transmit citizenship to the child. Learn more about transmitting citizenship here.
• The child’s foreign birth certificate.
• Proof of citizenship of the US citizen parent(s). Your current passport is the preferred form of proof. Your U.S. birth certificate or naturalization certificate is also acceptable.
• Proof of the relationship between the US citizen parent(s) and the child. Your child’s birth certificate with both parents’ names on it is the best form of proof.
• If you are married, we need to see proof. If you have prior marriages, we need to see proof of how those marriages ended.
• Payment for CRBA (US$100) and U.S. passport (US$105). We accept Visa, Mastercard, US Dollars, and Egyptian Pounds.

All foreign documents need to be translated. You are required to bring photocopies of all documents submitted (excluding the application forms); if you do not provide copies, you will be charged a fee of $1 per page according to the consular fee schedule.

If you appear for your interview without completed applications and required supporting documentation, your application will not be accepted, and you will be required to make another appointment.  Follow these instructions carefully to avoid having to return to the Embassy a second time.

After your application for a CRBA and US passport are approved, the certificate and passport will be sent to you via DHL.
