The
Northwest Fisheries Science Center has collaborated with the Coastal
Services Center to produce a Salmonid Abundance database and GIS
for the Pacific Northwest. The NWFSC is using this database to
store new Salmonid data as it becomes available and maintains
data that goes back to the 1930's. This database is becoming an
essential tool for NWFS scientists for updating the status of
ESA listings for Salmonids in the Pacific Northwest. This database
is updated and queried by NWFSC scientists and researchers via
the Internet. A full featured, easy to use query interface has
been built, that allows users to fine tune their query to a specific
species and run of salmon. Once the results have been returned,
the user can export all of the records into a standard format
so that they can perform the analysis that they need using their
choice of software. This database is also connected to a GIS system
that tracks the locations of where the fish have been counted.
An Internet Map Server produces dynamic maps that represent the
locations of the query. These maps can then be exported to a high-resolution
PDF file so that they can be saved by the user. A full-featured
interactive mapping tool has also been linked to this data. This
interactive mapping tool allows users to narrow the search to
a specific geographic extent or to a specific geographic feature
such as a watershed boundary.
