Lineage. Established as 480 Antisubmarine Group (Separate) on 19 Jun 1943. Activated on 21 Jun 1943. Disestablished on 29 Jan 1944. Reestablished, and consolidated (31 Jul 1985) with the 580 Air Resupply and Communications Wing, which was established on 15 Mar 1951. Activated on 16 Apr 1951. Inactivated on 8 Sep 1953. Redesignated: 480 Special Operations Wing on 31 Jul 1985; 480 Intelligence Wing on 23 Oct 2003. Activated on 1 Dec 2003.

Operations. Activated in North Africa in Jun 1943, replacing a series of provisional organizations. Carried out antisubmarine patrols in an area of the Atlantic extending north and west from Morocco. Its antisubmarine activity reached a peak in Jul 1943 when enemy U-boats concentrated off the coast of Portugal to intercept convoys bound for the Mediterranean. Destroying and damaging several submarines during the month, the group aided in protecting supply lines to forces involved in the campaign for Sicily. It also participated in protection of convoys and engaged numerous enemy aircraft. In Sep 1943, part of the group moved temporarily to Tunisia and participated in the assault on Italy; missions included searching for enemy submarines, covering Allied convoys, and protecting the Italian fleet after the surrender of Italy. Moved to the US in Nov 1943 and disbanded in Jan 1944. The 580th Air Resupply and Communications Wing activated in Apr 1951 and trained in psychological warfare and unconventional operations in the US and Libya until inactivation in Sep 1953.
