Location
Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex are located in Montgomery, the Alabama state capitol, and Alabama's historic River Region. Montgomery's Tri-County area is rich in history and combines a small town atmosphere with big city features. Montgomery is centrally located 82 miles south of Birmingham, the largest city in the state, and 162 miles from Atlanta, Georgia. 350,000 people reside in the Montgomery greater metropolitan region. The moderate cost of living, warm climate, location, and military environment attract many military retirees and families to the heart of Alabama. History
The Wright Brothers established the first U.S. civilian flying school in Montgomery in 1910. In the 1930's, the Army Air Corps Tactical School moved to Maxwell and Montgomery became the country's center for airpower education. Air University continues the proud tradition of educating tomorrow's planners and leaders, in air and space power for the Air Force, other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, federal government civilians and many international organizations. Mission
Maxwell-Gunter is home to Air University, the 42d Air Base Wing, the 908th Airlift Wing, Headquarters Operations and Sustainment Systems Group and many associate organizations. Air University is a major component of Air Education and Training Command and is the Air Force's center for professional military education for officers, enlisted and civilian personnel throughout their careers.
Population Served
Maxwell-Gunter serves a large population made up of over 25,000 active duty, guard and reserve, family members, civilians, contractors, and retirees. In addition, more than 20,000 students attend Air University schools each year.
Base Transportation
ITT manages base transportation service for Maxwell-Gunter. Transportation’s normal operating hours are 5:00 a.m - 9:00 p.m. during the week and 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. on weekends and holidays. There is no regular base taxi service from the Montgomery airport to the base and no shuttle buses operate on Maxwell-Gunter.
Sponsorship
Each time you move you should request a sponsor prior to your arrival. You may contact your Military Personnel Flight to request a sponsor. Your sponsor will provide you and your family with installation and community information. Your sponsor will assist with pre-arrival arrangements, answer questions, meet you personally upon arrival, and ensure your move to Maxwell-Gunter goes smoothly and all your inprocessing needs are met.
Permanent party personnel report to their unit for inprocessing. All students report to their respective schools for inprocessing.
You may contact your current base Postal Service Center to complete a change of address, Air Force Form 624. Both Maxwell and Gunter Annex have forwarding mail addresses. The temporary mailing address for Maxwell is 550 East Maxwell Blvd #3000, Maxwell AFB, AL 36112. The temporary mailing address for Gunter Annex is 100 South Turner Blvd #3000, Maxwell AFB-Gunter Annex, AL 36114.
Temporary Quarters
The University Inn on Maxwell and Gunter offers temporary lodging. Reservations may be made in advance by telephone, 334-953-2055 or DSN 312-493-2055, or on-line. If lodging is not available on base, obtain a non-availability statement from University Inn and a list of government contracted hotels in the area will be provided. Pets are not allowed in lodging. Please make arrangements for your pets prior to arrival here by checking with your sponsor or visit this link for a kennel.
Relocation Assistance
The Airman and Family Readiness Center has many resources and services to help you make a successful transition to Maxwell-Gunter. If you need household items while awaiting your shipment of household goods, the loan closet has items available for check-out until yours arrive. Free child care is available through the Child Care for PCS program that provides 20 hours per child within 60 days of your arrival. Individual assistance with family member employment and educational opportunities is also available. There is also a resource center with computers for internet access and Fax machines. Individual financial planning is offered for unexpected expenses associated with relocation. The Air Force Aid Society is available to assist with financial emergencies that may occur. You will be scheduled for Right Start (Newcomers Intro) by the MPF. Right Start is a series of informative briefings presented by base agencies for the benefit of the newcomers. Right Start is mandatory for military, and spouses are cordially invited to attend with the service member.
Critical Installation Information
Air War College and Air Command and Staff College students with families requesting base housing should remember the advance housing application, DD Form 1746, must be received by March 31st of the school year for first round housing assignments.
May, June, July and August are extremely high PCS months for Maxwell-Gunter. It is very important that inbound personnel arriving during these months call the Maxwell Traffic Management Flight in advance at 334-953-4774/4775 or DSN 312-493-4774/4775 to provide contact information.
Passports and Visas
Ensure member and/or dependents have the required passports and/or visa prior to final out-processing. Member and/or dependents are not allowed to final out-process without the required passports/visas in hand for themselves (if applicable) and/or dependents. Members electing the accompanied tour will not be permitted to out-process without having the required passports/visas in hand for themselves (if applicable) and/or dependents. These actions are necessary to prevent unforeseen hardships to the military members and their families.
